Discover our history
Our history begins in the middle of the 19th century. Our story is inked to institutions that decisively contributed to Spain’s progress and modernization. BBVA is a young entity that represents the coming together of BBV and Argentaria in 1999.
Banco de Bilbao was founded in 1857 and Banco de Vizcaya in 1901. Both banks merged in 1988 determined to support and promote the industrialization of the Basque Country and thus of the rest of the state. Argentaria was a privatized Group of formerly state owned public banks. Banco Hipotecario, the oldest of them, was created in 1872 to channel public debt payments from the General Secretariat of Treasury and was later involved in financing and encouraging development loans. Its first borrower as such was the renowned Marquis of Salamanca, whose palace is nowadays one of our main head offices.
Therefore, BBVA Group was created in 1999 as a result of the merger of BBV and Argentaria, two financial groups with strong roots in Spain as an entity that blends youth and tradition.
Understanding the increasingly global nature of business, we began a growth strategy in Latin America, acquiring first-rate banks in growing markets. In the 1990s the South American expansion took place while in the 2000s the Group expanded mostly in México and USA. We have also acquired two major Spanish institutions, Unnim and Catalunya Bank (located in Catalonia) and we are the leading shareholder in Garanti, Turkey’s major bank.
